Chukar - Heaven or Hell!
Is It Heaven Or Hell? Both!
Heaven sent to Oregon and Idaho bird hunters is the chance to spend an eternity in hell. Or heaven depending on your view point! Idaho started introducing chukars in the 1930's and hunters have reaped the benefit of many fine days in the field and at the dinner table. When accompanied by a great pointing dog the joy of filling the frying pan is extraordinary to say the least.
Chukars inhabit the exact place in this world that most sane people definitely do not want to go for a hike in. It can be and usually is hell on your legs, gear ,lungs and truck! It is heaven to find the top of a ridge and see your dog on a solid point and experience a bunch of 10 or 50 chukars explode into the heavens. One of the great benefits of being a Chukar hunter is the long season that runs basically from October thru January!
Great for your health, you can combine Chukar hunting with hiking, rafting, fishing, biking, or riding your favorite motor vehicle. Hiring a jet boat to haul you up the Main Salmon or down into Hells Canyon are popular ways to go after chukars. Cast and blast by combining a rafting trip down the Main Salmon or Middle Fork of the Salmon and be like Walt Blackadar who combined elk, deer, steelheed, trout and chukars all into one trip! Add in a hot spring or two and a stiff drink around the camp fire and you are definitely in heaven or at least as close as you can get while you still have a heart beat! Chase them high in the Pahsimeroi mountains like Ernest Hemingway. Or join me in the high deserts of Idaho and Oregon and be delighted with the other worldly vistas and views of the mysterious cayonlands.
