Boise is a great place to retire! But you do not have to rely on our word for that. Forbes, amongst others ranked Boise highly as a fine spot for your grand finale. In fact Boise made the Forbes top 25 places to retire in 2014!

Retire To Meridian

Boise and the surrounding area, nicknamed the Treasure Valley, rank high in almost every metric there is with regards to quality of life. From the great 4 season climate to the low crime rate there are numerous reasons why Boise is a great place to live and retire! For you it might be the abundance of golf courses, or maybe the awesome walking on the greenbelt and the ridge to rivers trail system. It could also be the proximity to world class outdoor recreation like fly fishing on the South Fork of the Boise or downhill or cross country skiing that is as close as 16 miles from your front door at Bogus Basin! How about the arts! The Philharmonic, the summer run at the Shakespeare Festival, Ballet Idaho and the Boise Art Museum are all a site for sore eyes! The people are really friendly! The kids are respectful! Another bonus is inexpensive direct flights to all west coast cities. Drive to Portland in 6 hours, the coast in 7 and Seattle in 8 hours. Wilderness trailhead’s are 3 hours. 240 days of sun, the same as Las Vegas without the oppressive heat!

While the Treasure Valley has long been a popular spot to retire we are not Mesa, Arizona. No Leisure World style communities here. The land of high walls surrounding an expansive compound with a hundred different activities ranging from jewelry making to wood working, remains a more southerly journey. Boise and Meridian do have senior communities and other communities that are geared towards over 55 living but are not exclusive to people over 55.

Like This One!

A little history, starting 30 or so years ago we saw our first retirement communities geared to only residents 55 and over. A retirement community here in Boise then, basically meant a mobile home park that was restricted to people over the age of 55. A couple of examples of those would be Shenandoah and Sunflower park. A third one called Willowbrook was built in that era, but has some modular homes and the rest are stick built. These are pretty plain, not much granite, upgrades or 3 car garages here.

Changing times and changing housing styles have also changed the homes available in both senior communities and communities that are building homes that appeal to retirees, but are not exclusive to people over 55. They have started building stick built single level homes and the HOA dues can range from take care of all the yard work and sometimes the outside maintenance to just taking care of the entrance’s and club house pool.  They are predominately single levels and the quality is usually really good. The newest developments feature granite counters, hardwood floors, walk in showers and many other great features like central vaccum.

Clubhouse Hazelwood VillageSome have a subdivision type feel with a back yard and space all the way around the home. For instance James Place at Ashford Greens is a gated over 55 community in west Meridian. It has a lot of single family homes with small yards and lots of green common areas and a number of homes backing up to nearby Lakeview golf course. All stick built homes and few fences.

Several other developments have gone with a side yard concept with the garage in back. Here you are allowed the use of the neighbors side yard and you agree to allow the neighbor in the other direction to use a part of yours.  This gets the developer around the 5 foot set backs set imposed by the city. You have access to your shared portion for maintenance, window cleaning etc.  All the homes are stick built and designed for the over 55 community. A great example of this style would be gated Heritage Grove in Meridian. The homes are very stylish and as they are still building there so, availability is good.

A third option would be the all age subdivisions that are building on smaller lots and with better quality than our tract style builders. In response to the big footage and average quality of the tract builders there are several subdivisions that have sprung up focusing on lower footage and higher quality. These are not limited to residents over 55. The lots are typically smaller than the tract style subdivisions and so few families migrate here. The idea is that they can put more quality into the finish, rather than 2 extra bedrooms, a bonus room and a bigger yard. Examples of these would be Hazelwood and Brownstone both in southwest Boise.

 Senior Subdivisions By City

For the purposes of this page I am outlining the developments with stick built homes. Scroll to bottom to see what’s available in each subdivision. Some of the existing developments may not always have active listings as most of the developments are from 25- 50 units.
