The Visual Arts Collective has sprung from it's roots in the Linen District and is striving to be the place for exhibits, concerts and all things art in Boise. With a place for visual art, performing art, fashion, culture and more, they are all able to live side-by-side in the new space. Now located in Garden City, VAC does more than just offer people a place to see paintings or music but is an integral part of forming the art culture of the area. Billing itself as Boise’s “first multi-disciplinary arts facility” it is rapidly becoming a popular center for all sorts of artistic experiences. With help and support from donors like The Rauschenberg Foundation, what was once a part time, sometimes sort of deal in the Linen District, has grown into a full time experience. Now located in Garden City it is part art gallery, sometimes concert venue and full time bar! We enjoyed the sounds of Steve Fulton Music complete with a 16 piece ensemble to celebrate the vinyl release of Steve’s album Eponym. You will find the VAC at 3638 Osage Street 2 blocks west of Orchard.
This was my first time to the collective and we were greeted with an array of larger than life pop icons created by Bruce Maurey on the walls. The eyes say it all. Several I could not get and a couple where a little off. But we had a ball trying to figure them all out. It turns out the few that I could not get were ones I had never heard of or where out of my wheel house. Many were obvious and compelling. But who shot Lemmy Kilmeister???? Never seen him before. I must say Bruce has the eyes down pat. I took a few snap shots and included them here so you can check them out. Bruce's work will be on display through May 31st.
Upcoming events include Frankly Frankies ART vs FREEDOM: A First Amendment Cabaret on May 19 & 20. June 9th find MahaVia Flamenco and Off Center Dance have joined up to present an evening of fabulous flamenco fusion! Standup comedian and storyteller Emma Arnold will be live at VAC! Emma will deliver an evening of stand up comedy and story telling – accompanied by Thomas Paul on June 16. July 8th is for everybody who loves drag! Common who doesn't? Gesamkunstwerk Presents Max Collective at the Visual Arts Collective VIP tickets available and include reserved front row seating and priority for meet and greet. The show will feature Max as well as some exciting acts in Boise’s drag and burlesque scene! Then swinging all the way to the other end of the spectrum is a show on August 2 with Western, country and singer song wirter Michael Martin Murphey and an opening set by Andy Byron and Special Guest TBA. Nominateed for multiple grammy’s Michael’s songs have been recorded by the likes of Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, John Denver, Cher, Lyle Lovett, Flatt and Scruggs, Claire Hamill, Hoyt Axton, Roger Miller, Bobbie Gentry, Michael Nesmith, and the Monkees. Hey I said the Monkees! This should sell right out! All we need is a guy getting shot out of a cannon and somebody sawn in half in a box and the whole art spectrum will be covered!
The Visual Arts Collective is also a great place to have your next event. You can rent it for the whole day for $1600.00! It is an over 21 establishment. Offering 3500 square feet of space with options for sit down, theatre seating and recption style events the VAC can hold almost 400 peeps for your next event! We are headed back for the Suzanne Vega concert in a couple weeks. Remember her, my son was floored when I was actually able to sing the first 6 or 8 lines of Left of Center.... Should be fun! See you there.
